comment How to travel from Kitwe in Zambia to Kabale in Uganda through the DRC
Hmmm. Not an unreasonable point in itself, in the sense that there is no one correct answer. I'm asking for personal experiences after all. But, then again, I'm asking what the situation on the ground is, now. In the volatile region that is eastern DRC, I would argue that the question then, in fact, is answerable. In the eastern DRC, at the moment, there is little else to rely on besides recent personal experiences.

Am not so sure if it's very broad. Specifically, I'm interested in any recent personal experience. So, yeah, that would include ease of travel, quality of the roads, existence of public transport, personal safety, cost of living, safety related to the current violent resurgence. I can read the guides, say the LP, but that won't tell me whether i can rely on them.

comment Travelling to Kyzyl, Tuva from Mörön, Mongolia
When I lived in Mongolia, crossing the border by road was definitely possible for those not holding a Russian or Mongolian passport. But it was also only an option at very few border crossings, like the one north of Suhbaatar and the crossing all the way out west, where the Transmongolian enters the country. But, indeed, my information is some 8 years old.

Also, we can't tell you whether you use the wrong websites if you don't mention the ones you've used. :)

comment Why are visas not electronic?
@MarkMayo: Yes, but that would require all border crossings in the world to be able to read this information, not just all border crossings of one particular country.

Electronic visas only work if all border crossings of a country are 'online' all the time, to be able to check, with a central authority, that the person crossing the border actually has the right to enter the country. But this still requires the existence of a passport that needs to be carried around.

When available, yup.

Hm. You open the app and click the 'Flight tracker' icon. Plane locations are displayed when available.

comment Are there offline maps for WiFI locations while traveling
That doesn't make the app more useful to me. If I end up having to do this for Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia and South Africa (the area in which I currently move around), wi-fi finder better start paying me first. :) I don't mind contributing (hence my current score of 1692 on this very website), but I also need to get something from the service in question.

I actually have had this app installed on my iPad for over a year, but I haven't been happy with it at all. This might be because I typically travel to less popular locations (Africa). For example, I'm currently in Kampala (Uganda) and the app only lists one wifi spot in the whole country, though I personally know over a dozen, both free and paid, in the city itself.

comment How to make the best use of signs while hitchiking?
Agreed. Though the best bet for me often was a gas station on the edge of town, which could be a tough one if you don't know the city. Then again, with portable digital maps being ubiquitous, finding these should be much easier now. Also, there used to be a book on this, "the best hitch hiking spots in Europe", or something like that.

I think you're out of luck. You might want to give Skype WiFi (itunes.apple.com/us/app/skype-wifi/id444529922?mt=8) a try, though.

Nice, but still allows for Gowalla and not for Flickr. Odd.

comment Are there scheduled flight connections operated with a helicopter?
There used to be a scheduled heli service between Freetown airport (Lungi) and Freetown, Sierra Leone. When the Russians (pilots) blew up the chopper, the serviced ceased to be.
