comment What causes some cities to have little in the way of tourism attractions?
As @GayotFow hints at, what constitutes a 'tourist attraction' is relative. On top of that, particularly western cities have a lot of 'tourist attractions' because they went through a period of extreme wealth, allowing for the creation of a range of memorable structures. If a city only recently grew, or grew as sprawl over a longer period of time, little of general interest will have been constructed along the way. Compare Rome to Lagos.

comment Iran changes to foreign bank cards/online hotel reservations after sanctions lifted?
Interesting in that airbnb is illegal in many conservative countries. I just checked UAE, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Indonesia and found hosts in all of them. In which countries is airbnb illegal according to local law?

comment Would a non-business traveler ever benefit from collecting air miles, as compared to simply buying the cheapest ticket available?
@reirab Yeah, I figured. Yet, still, would that ticket be based on the regular fare of the ticket, or on a discounted fare that you would otherwise be able to get? Either way, an actual example as in the first comment in this thread would be helpful.

This comment thread shows exactly the uncertainty displayed by @JonathanReez in the original question. Sure, there are scenarios where collected air miles could get a non-business traveler a ticket, but if we presume this traveler in principle will get the cheapest ticket between two places, does that still hold?

I'm also skeptical. Specifically because the miles that need to be spend are typically related to the regular price of the ticket you want to buy, while I don't think there are situations where taxes are included in the part of the ticket you can get by using airmiles. In addition, it requires you to always fly with the same airline, or at least with the same alliance, which might not be relevant at all, if you're trying to get the cheapest ticket on every flight. So, as a recreational traveler, you'd need to fly a lot to make this worth your while.

Indeed. Wikipedia puts the number of murders in the Americas at some 160000 per year and the BBC puts the number of predicted Zika infections in the Americas as up to four million. That's an order of magnitude in difference. Yet, the WHO states the number of cases of malaria in the Americas to be at around 800000 per year and dengue at about two million. So, I'll update my statement :)

@user568458 Yeah, that sums it up quite well. That said, if you're interested, this book is very much worth a gander: amzn.to/1PDiflf

@user568458 It's hard to give examples of things that are not available. It's not that easy to find pre-revolutionary art in Iranian museums, as a lot ware removed during the early years of the revolution.
