comment When you bring someone to a restaurant in Russia
It was long ago for me (involved with someone without much of a common language), we carried the dictionary everywhere. Google would have been a godsend! Communication is slow but that didn't stop our hearts. Our relationship stemmed from proximity, I can't imagine people deliberately seeking out the situation.

I've done basically this at home once--busted water heater.

Your sanity, no.

comment My family member has never flown, wondering if someone can meet him at his layover and lead him to his next plane
Second the time bit! I certainly wouldn't book a 52 minute layover for a virgin traveler! I'd only book it for myself if there wasn't any other reasonable option.

comment Solo traveller from UK to JFK
@steph JFK is crowded but on arrival you will have only one possible path to take so you just follow the crowd until it divides between citizens and visitors, after that the paths converge again. A lot of people going the same way as you are doesn't cause confusion. I've been in many airports in the world, if in doubt follow the crowd. Most of them are seasoned travelers that know the way.

Agricultural bag searches are common if you are coming from an area of concern to them. They run the bags through an x-ray, anything that shows a density similar to a solid block of moist food-type material will likely result in the bag being opened to identify the them. Such a search is very likely if you answer yes to the question about whether you are carrying food.

comment Bringing cash into the USA
@Tom Unfortunately, the police tend to take the position that large amounts of cash are are criminal in nature. Wire it.

comment Can I enter the US with a visa issued outside my home country?
I can't specifically address the US but I have entered many countries with visas issued from places other than where I lived. I would think if it was going to be an issue they would refuse to issue it in the first place.

comment What counts as a bag and what counts as a vest?
My observation: I've worn a belt pack without question, I've worn a Scottevest (lots of pockets but designed more subtly than pocket vests are) without question. Things which you can wear while in your seat don't seem to cause notice--which makes sense as they aren't going to take up any cargo space.

comment What's the longest scheduled public bus ride in the world?
@MastaBaba Such runs are scheduled although generally seasonal. Space available most anyone (the driver(s) can reject someone they don't want) can ride although the price for less than the full trip is negotiated, not fixed. That part of it is pretty close, what I was questioning is that is the sightseeing part of it.

comment What's the longest scheduled public bus ride in the world?
As for that oz-bus, they changed modes of transport. As far as I'm concerned the question needs qualification, though--do bus-based tours count? Back in the 70s I was aware of Kathmandu-London, one bus all the way but it was for seeing the countries you passed through, not simply to get from one end to the other. Space permitting you could negotiate a ride for part of the distance.

My understanding is that it was originally 72 hours then they changed it to 72 hours starting at the midnight after arrival.
