comment Can I leave O'Hare airport during my layover?
Doing it with 9 hours is very different than doing it with 5.5 hours.

Legally, yes. I certainly wouldn't go anywhere other than right near the airport with a 5.5 hour layover, though!

comment Do I need to pick up my luggage and re-check between Shanghai and DFW when connecting through LAX?
I have never done it on AA but when I fly through there on UA the bags are tagged to their final destination but they show up on the baggage carousel anyway so you can take them through customs. After you exit customs there has always been a station nearby to drop the baggage at.

comment Why do you need to take out your laptop from your bag during airport security checks?
@Phil The same thing has happened to me. In the pre 9/11 era I had packed very quickly due to a family emergency--I just grabbed what I needed and threw it in my rollaboard. The chargers ended up in a tangle and that drew a hand inspection. Since then I have always been careful about how things are arranged and the only thing that has drawn a hand inspection was a box of batteries.

comment How do carpool lanes in the US work?
Definitely check the hours on the signs. I have encountered such lanes that switch directions based on the time of day.

Around here the lanes are marked HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) with hours but no number. The law says 2 but there's no way to know that while just driving down the road.

comment Prescriptions in checked luggage: ok when travelling to Spain?
My impression from Google is that that drug has street value--such a drug should never be checked. Given the reality of airport security I would have it in something that's not too easy to open--locked or zip-tied shut. That would also hide it from your traveling companions.

comment How to avoid losing someone while traveling?
There have been various comments about assigned meeting places--that assumes you can arrange them. I was lost for hours in the airport in Tokyo because someone shoved between me and my parents and knocked me onto an operating baggage carousel in the process--on my back and wearing a heavy backpack. By the time I got off that carousel I had no idea where we had been when we got separated and thus I couldn't return there. I have no good answers for what happened to me.

comment I have a double entry visa but need to enter China three times. What can I do?
@Jaume Of course it was China, why else would I reply? I did nothing special at the time of application (although it went through a visa agent, something that's basically required in the US due to them playing tit-for-tat), when we got to passport control I saw the official mark off the old visa. I'm not aware of any comment about this although he could have said something to my wife that I wouldn't have understood.

Anyone carrying that kind of gear isn't going to be happy with the schedule of a tour.

comment What to do if drugs / a bomb are planted in your travel bag?
@Karlson You very well might not after a long flight. Of course the bag feels heavier than when you started out!

comment Which road shall I take from Denver, CO to Salt Lake City, UT: I-80 or I-70 w/ US-6?
Beware that the southern routes climb to 10,000'. This could be an issue for people who are sensitive to altitude.

comment What to do in Las Vegas without having to sin?
Zumanity is in the regular list, my understanding is that it has some toplessness and it's quite sexualized. They specifically advertize it as: "The Sensual Side of Cirque du Soleil."
