comment Enable Internet access on the go in Ireland
Can't you just get a data SIM locally and just switch to the home SIM for those few calls? If it's really just a few that might be actually be the cheaper solution. Perhaps drag along an old phone just for the calls.

comment How to deal with future uncertainties when booking an airfare
I wouldn't know about the prices, but it seems to me your scenario is the reason open-ended tickets exist. When offered (not all airlines offer them) that might well be the cheapest option.

comment Send 1 overweight suitcase instead of 2 underweight?
It may be more than just difficult for baggage handlers, depending on local regulations it may even be a work code violation to (manually) handle bags above a certain weight. This means the airline might get fined for allowing your overweight bag. Of course regulations differ around the world, but it's often the main reason for the per bag limits.

comment Languages spoken in the Netherlands
@David Mulder: I think the Dutch are annoyed by people living and/or working in NL without learning the language and make assumptions about that based on where you're (perceived to be) from. If you're clearly a tourist you won't run into that, if you come around to, say, clean someone's windows or install his kitchen it's more likely you're expected to be able to speak Dutch.

@user568458: You can safely assume that 99% of the Dutch (above 10y) know enough English to answer 'No' to 'Do you speak English?', and hello is close enough to the Dutch 'hallo' to be understood.

comment Travel in the Schengen area after my residence card was lost or stolen
His passport, which he still has, should (assuming he isn't from a very exotic country) be a valid ID. All Ryanair has to check is his identity, so a passport should be sufficient.
