comment US and Canada Border Crossing and Computer Privacy: What do I need to know?
Are you sure that normal laws apply at customs? Normally, a police officer can not conduct a physical search of you or your belongings without a warrant or probable cause, but this does not apply at a border crossing. My impression was that there is no expectation of privacy when you are at a US border and that searches (including those of computer equipment) are perfectly legal. This goes for US and non-US citizens.

comment What's the cheapest transport to get from Ataturk International aiport to the Taksim Square area of Istanbul?
@dbkk Yes, but only the one at Kabataş is called a funicular (it is the funicular in Turkish). The one at Karaköy is called Tünel.

comment How far north from Vancouver can you get by train?
There's also a ferry from Prince Rupert down to Vancouver Island - although it doesn't dock as far south as Courtenay, or you could do a round trip with just train and ferry!

comment Is there a bus/coach direct from Batumi, Georgia to Istanbul, Turkey?
@hippietrail I wish I could remember the details, beyond that all companies offered essentially the same deal. The bus takes the Hopa-Rize-Trabzon route, so adding a very slow border crossing, you are looking at about 24h. The price was very low... probably half of what you'd get were you to leave from a Turkish city, and that's not counting the cost from Batumi to Turkey.

comment What time do the city buses start running in Istanbul?
@hippietrail Ah interesting. I once hitched out of Istanbul starting not too far from there. It must have taken 4 rides just to get to the outskirts of town, where a truck picked us up for the long haul. How did yours go?

comment Is it safe to drink the tap water in Istanbul?
What @Comptrol said: I don't enjoy the taste of Istanbul's water, but have no reservations drinking it or washing vegetables with it.
