comment How widespread is sailing between Japanese islands in private yachts?
I haven't tried it in Japan yet. I haven't been in island areas and I haven't noticed private sailboats. If I get to Japan on my upcoming trip I shall certainly look for information. I've met sailing types by walking into a marina full of expats in Mexico, eating at a seaside cafe in Greece, through friend-of-a-friend in Sydney, chatting to the person sitting next to me on a flight between Vancouver and Mexico. Then there's hostels with notices up offering transport or seeking help or company on boats. I know this happens in some places, now I want to know if it happens in Japan too.

It's normally the wealthy who own sailboats, not just in Japan. It's normal that marinas are scarce and expensive too. Yet the people that sail their own boats seem to be very friendly to foreigners and travellers, not the ones with mega yachts but often self made people whose small yacht might cost the price of a luxury car. Often retired couples or divorced men in their fifties and sixties. So I'm just saying you've come to some conclusions based on your assumptions that would make sense anywhere, yet in my experience there are plenty of friendly people sailing who don't fit this equation.

comment Is it really much cheaper for an Australian to get a Chinese visa in Malaysia than in Australia?
Well if they make it difficult I'll just ase KL as my travel hub. No visa hassles there and it's the home of Air Asia (-;

comment How to find out which days the Chinese embassy/consulate in Kuala lumpur is open?
Ah yes I see Hari Raya Puasa is the Malay name for Eid al-Fitr, which is in the answer I found. My Malaysian friend mad me think this would be nearer August 1 when I arrive but it looks like I could get my visa before Eid if I'm lucky.

comment Is it safe to drink tap water in Morocco?
This answer is just pure subjective opinion with no factual information. I wouldn't drink the tapwater in Morocco either but I wouldn't try to answer a factual question without a factual answer.

comment Is any Southeast Asian country easier for obtaining a visa for China?
I might be coming in from Laos because I don't need a visa there like I do for Vietnam. But I've been to Vietnam before and would love to go back. I don't expect it to be too hard to get a Vietnam visa in a neighbouring country but China has more requirements and I've never been there before.

If your booked accommodation really does prove not to exist at the last minute, there are some websites that specialize in last minute bookings. The most famous of these would be the cunningly named lastminute.com
