Backpacking since Christmas Day, 1989. Hitchhiking since mid 2010.

For the first time I managed to save enough travel funds in less than six months in Australia.

I've been hitchhiking around Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, and now Cambodia, and will continue hitchhiking around Asia for the next nine or ten months.

Great work! So I should look into Kuwait and China!

Wow! Any chance you can include a reference for this? Turkish is OK if you can't find an English ref.

I'm expecting at my level and style of travel that for one month if I take $700 I'll have a bit to change back when I leave, emergencies aside of course. But I didn't want to include that and make the question less useful for others.

Oh well I'm not American so in theory I'm not supposed to be too concerned about various alphabet agencies. But not just Kuwait but also Armenia and Georgia. Armenia might be the least under direct US pressure but that's just a hunch.

comment How easy/hard is it to backpack to Taiwan knowing only English?
One caveat with doing Pinyin on your phone as that most Pinyin IMEs by default do simplified Chinese characters. Taiwan officially uses traditional characters (input with different IMEs). Less educated people can't always read them well. Hopefully your phone will have a setting to allow you to type traditional characters using Pinyin - most should.

It's totally easy. Plenty of people speak English and it's a really safe and friendly country. Try to learn some Mandarin there since there's not as much opportunity to learn Hokkien and Hakka which are also spoken there. They even have an easier-to-pronounce dialect of Mandarin compared to if you were going to visit Beijing.

Guys I included a link to another question covering all these comments. I guess I'm just going to have to bloat my question with off-topic details ... \-:

@JonathanReez: I intend to travel for a month. Why do you not feel concerned about carrying large sums of cash around multiple countries and border crossings?
