Backpacking since Christmas Day, 1989. Hitchhiking since mid 2010.

For the first time I managed to save enough travel funds in less than six months in Australia.

I've been hitchhiking around Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and now Vietnam, and will continue hitchhiking around Asia for the next five or six months.

Besides running water, many caves have bats and some have birds. But yes I didn't think of caves at all when I thought of the question.

It would be great to know if somebody has actually measured decibel rating around Svalbard to quantify just how quiet it is.

@GayotFow: I was most interested in natural places. I don't know the answer. The idea just popped into my head while I was searching for mnemonic images to help remember Vietnamese vocabulary! Thought it would be intriguing in our "factoid" category. I also thought "I bet somebody has even investigated and measured this". So I am after objective known quantified quietest places. Not just mellow or serene or peaceful places generally since we're not allowed opinions and polling and stuff on Stack Exchange.

Almost all questions on all Stack Exchange sites are trivia questions to the people who are not interested in them. If I found I was near one of these places I would absolutely consider visiting during my wanderings around the globe. Anyway feel free to ask a question on meta if you feel strongly that we're opening the floodgates to having too many questions or whatever it is.

@AmitAmola: Travelling overland to Kazakhstan from India? That would make this question make sense.

comment Is it safer to travel with another person when hitchhiking in western Europe?
I think this answer is fine in its current state. I did want to mention that in my experience when I travelled by train in Western Europe I found it very anonymous, not friendly. I met loads of friendly people hitchhiking there though. And I met a couple of friendly people on trains in eastern Europe and many friendly people on trains in India, especially the cheaper trains and cheaper carriages.
