Saved from the web by a job in industry. Coding GUI for computer-aided railway realignment machinery.

At last a job where I have time to do stuff properly and don't have to worry about loads of unfixed bugs coming back to haunt me.

comment Swiss customs: necessary when travelling from France to USA via GVA?
You'd forgo visiting Geneva for a couple of bottles of wine?! Why don't you visit Geneva and buy the wine there? Chances are you could find the same or similar Burgandy. Failing that, the Swiss also make wine :)

comment Tactics to avoid getting harassed by corrupt police
I witnessed someone successfully doing the "I'm sorry I don't understand" in Tanzania. It has to be said that the policeman in question didn't speak English, so that helped.

comment How to intentionally get denied entry to the US, without getting into trouble?
@vartec, weird comment! There's no law against Muslims walking into churches, and there's nothing in the Christian faith which forbids helping a Muslim (quite the contrary, in fact). I definitely think she'd have a better chance than if she walked into a mosque...

comment Where can I stash a rental car while visiting London?
I managed to find something fairly near to the centre (Old Kent Road) on airbnb, with parking included, but I was coming in from the West, so I could avoid going through the congestion zone to get there.

comment Which are the main spa baths in Switzerland and which are their characteristics?
Since answering this, I've been to Saillon twice, and Lavey once. Of the two Saillon wins.

comment What rail cards / passes / discounts should visitors to Switzerland be aware of
@RoflcoptrException, wow, I stand corrected. Maybe that's changed, or maybe I just made a false assumption. So yes, you can get a 'demi-tarif' if you're abroad, but you'd still have to be spending more than two times its price on tickets for it to be worth while.

comment DIY London tour using public transport
Postscriptum: ended up with DIY tour, but it only half worked. (My) Dithering and uncertainty about stops when changing buses didn't help, and then we waited ages for a Routemaster which didn't materialise. With hindsight I'd probably just spend two days at the Science Museum :)

Sounds interesting, and probably an excellent answer for most people. Unfortunately not for me :)

This is a good point, I'll have to weigh it in the balance.

(My Day A is simple: The Science Museum) Now you have provided food for thought for Day B, thanks.

If you suggest that the Science Museum may sound less fun than the Natural History, can I take anything else you say seriously? :)

comment Using 1000 CHF notes in Switzerland?
Exception (from this weekend): if you turn up with strictly no change, you won't be able to unplug the baggage trolley at the airport :)

Even for less: I think that you could pay for anything about 700.- without anyone raising an eyebrow.
