comment How to get to Battambang from Siem Reap?
I don't remember how much we paid. My Lonely Planet from 2008 lists US$15, by now that may be $20 or more. That's quite expensive for Cambodia because it is only for tourists.

comment Is it possible to travel to Cuba by sea (from e.g. Mexico)?
Oops, I should have investigated more. I'm sure I've seen some cruise ships when I was on Cuba in 2004, but you are right they are not American. The BBC has a bit about this: bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-12133640

comment Key vs. combo lock security for international travel
Over five years of constant traveling and locking my backpack I noticed two occasions where people tried to break my combo locks. They got bent a bit and I had to replace one of them later but they didn't succeed in breaking them. I'm not saying they can't be broken, but not by every kid.

comment Comparative safety of countries in Central America
I spent a few hours in Colon during the day, it was fine. People were friendly and it was quite different from the rest of Panama. During that day there were three bank robberies though and the police had blocked all the roads out of town. Most yachts to Columbia leave from the San Blas islands and you don't have to go to Colon for that.

comment Traveling between Alappuzha and Kollam
There is a bus from the ashram to the main highway between Alappuzha and Kollam, you can also take a rickshaw. On the highway are tons of buses in both directions. Considering it takes 8 hours on a big bed, any smaller boats will take much longer and would require overnight stays. You could also just take the bus, but that's kind of boring.

comment Where are the backpacker ghettos in India?
I am visiting all areas in India that potentially have these backpacker ghettos. And I know there is a limited number of them, maybe ten max. So it is not an open ended list. Someone who knows India well should be able to answer this in one answer.

All very good points but they don't answer my question, so I accept Reid's answer.

comment How to visit India, Nepal and Sri Lanka on a single trip
I did ask for an exception from the 2 month rule when I applied for the visa and added a itinerary as well, but the visa they sent back has no mention of it.

comment A day at Dubai International Airport and the city?
@thkala - agreed, I will not walk both ways, maybe not even once. I did not know about the overground public transport. I will spend more time walking in the city.

@Gagravarr - Not as a German, you get a free stamp on arrival, good for 30 days.

comment A day at Dubai International Airport and the city?
Thanks, the terminal to Al Ras is about 11km, so very walk-able in terms of distance. I will be there next week, so maybe it is not super hot yet. I will not do any shopping so I feel a day is enough.

I agree, once you are inside a proper net you are okay, but then they get you on the way to or on the toilet.

thanks Reid, I do always take repellent even in non-malaria area because bites are always annoying. But from experience, however even with lots of repellent and lots or clothes and mosquito nets, these little buggers always manage to bite me somehow.

comment Can I buy malaria medication in India?
I am aware of the fact that I have to take them a few weeks before but I will already have been in India for a while before I will visit the affected areas. Yes, you would think they sell the medication in areas where it is needed. But from my own experience that is not always the case.

it is just too easy to visit all European countries, still I haven't done that.
