I've heard that the actual tracks are owned by the freight train companies and AMTRACK just pays them to use them. However if there is a freight train on the tracks it always has priority to the passengers train because they own the tracks. That's you sometimes stand somewhere for hours.

Looking at the route itinerary for Guatemala to Panama city, you are right they actually do stop overnight, except for the last part from Costa Rica to Panama. Thinking about the roads, this makes sense. I wouldn't want to be on roads in Guatemala or Nicaragua at night.

@vartec: Most hostels around the world have a kitchen for guests where you can cook your own food. Many backpackers on a budget never eat in restaurants but always cook. Getting a few people to cook together makes this even cheaper.
