Given that no one really came forward with an answer, I am going to answer my own question. I am writing this answer at the Star Alliance Business Class lounge at departures so this experience is fresh. My original questions Is it an issue that my transit time is longer than 12 hours? Can I still leave the airport? The transit time being longer than ...

I'll answer your first two questions: Technically, the road can be done with a normal car, but practically it can't. Too many bad patches, particularly between southern Egypt and northern Kenya or Uganda. That same stretch is also the most insecure. People are kidnapped, robbed and murdered on that stretch, though plenty, particularly locals, do travel the ...

For practical purposes the answer is "Adaptors will be reasonably available AND importantly, European equipment will work properly on the provided Egyptian voltage and frequency". Also, Egypt notionally uses the "Europlug" (type C below) so many continental European appliances will plug in directly. You will also find the type F Schuko plug in use. So, in ...

Grant you, this is about 20 years out of date now, but Michael Palin basically travelled this route in Pole to Pole. He shows what the roads are like, if as the Wikipedia article suggests is still unpaved, in Ethopia, and by the end of the hour in the documentary, you truly feel what its like to progress through the mud. Sudan is also likely to still be in ...

As an aside, I would HIGHLY recommend "Swahili for the Brokenhearted" by Peter Moore. An Aussie travel writer (who I was fortunate enough to meet and hear speak at a travel show in London) he went overland from from Cape Town to Cairo, and the book would give you a great insight into what you might expect. Africa is VERY different to Europe, including ...

Ok, I was in Cairo in 2007. With the tensions some may have changed, but here are my suggestions: Alexandria - it's only a few hours away, and there are connections to get there (my tour company just offered a day trip before the tour started). It was fantastic and I'm so glad I got to it - the new Great Library is cool, lots of old monuments and ...

Of course it's possible, people do it every week every year. Last year I even cycled it (blog.samt.st) Is this highway passable from the start to the end with a normal car? Yes. The vast majority of cars in Africa are very old, so your 'normal' car will be fine. Are there dangerous regions that I have to cross? Northern Kenya was dangerous, now it's safe ...

You can try the Radioshack chain in Cairo, I found a good quality adapter there for a reasonable price after realising I had forgotten to pack one. There are several stores in central Cairo and the staff have a good level of English.

Cairo airport, along with every site in Egypt remotely connected to tourism, has ridiculous amounts of security, so you are in absolutely no physical danger. If you wait until morning, all that's going to happen is that you'll be stuck in a traffic jam on your way to the city! What's more, since the revolution, Cairo's rather notorious unmetered taxis are ...

Yes it is possible. Entering "train from cairo to luxor" in Google found me this link (first) and this link (second). You can book online here. The link explicitly gives prices for foreigners.

Museums: Cairo have a lot of museums, just to name a few. The Egyptian Museum is a MUST SEE. Khan Elkhalili: a major old market area. They sell a lot of antiques and souvenirs. Better to go at night. Pharaonic Village: a village, which simulate a lot of ancient Egyptian activities. Cairo Opera house: The Cairo opera house, with many nice shows. Al-Azhar ...
