There are many things that people are collecting. But the problem is that most of them are kind of boring... Is there anything more creative than just post marks, documents or coins?

I would prefer it to be of the small/medium size and representing the country/city that you've visited. What can it be?

What interests you? That is key. If you want to collect something because it its interesting, do it. Could be something different in every country. –  Rory Alsop Aug 23 '12 at 7:28
What can be the interesting subject of collecting for a traveller? Anything can be I'm afraid, which is not objective and not "one right answer". For me it's translations of Cien años de soledad but that surely can't be the one right answer because everybody else here who collects stuff while travelling doesn't collect what I collect. Since subjective questions and questions without "one right answer" are against the Stack Exchange rules I have to vote to close this question. But it would be an awesome topic for our blog or to drop in the chat room at any time. –  hippietrail Aug 23 '12 at 7:44
Welcome to Travel.SE. If you read our faq you'll see that we want questions that can be answered definitively, rather than open-ended ones that can start a discussion. That's best left to our Travel Chat room. In addition it's very broad - there are limitless things that can be collected. Perhaps if you indicated your interests, or added further details it might be suitable. However, at present it's subjective, there's no 'one right answer', and as such, or until this question is edited, we'll have to close it - sorry! –  Mark Mayo Aug 23 '12 at 7:48

I personally collect the badges/patches and then stich them to the backpack. It's a nice reminder of where you've been, is available for all countries and it's cheap. Also starts a lot of great conversations when people can see they've been to the same places as you. I'll try get up a photo of mine later :)

"Take only photos, leave only footprints" And you can take memories and note down experiences. Photos, memories and stories are quite lightweight and travel well.
