Just now, they new list of the top-rated hostels worldwide were published. The first five hostels are located in Lisbon, Portugal. I already noticed during the past years, that Lisbon has really a great amount of top rated hostels.

Is there any special reason for that?

By experience I noticed that Lisbon has some of the cheapest hostels in the western Europe. Maybe that's what they evaluate as good hostels. – hooray Jul 13 '12 at 17:52

This would surely elicit debate, no? Since all votes for hostels are purely subjective by those who stay there, there can't be a single solid answer as to why the best ones are there. Off the top of my head, it could be competition, it could be influence with the weather putting people in a good mood, the country could be fun making people like it more, the food, the people.... – Mark Mayo Jul 13 '12 at 18:29
I think it could be obviously answered. For example if you're going to ask hostelworld if they have any idea, or if you're going to do you're own representative field study, or if you compare the ratings of all hostels as @hooray has already indicated. I think after so many year of Lisbon's world domination, there have to be some educated guess why this is the case. – RoflcoptrException Jul 13 '12 at 18:38
Even if it was "they're the cheapest", that's correlation, not causation. There are cheaper hostels in say, Bolivia, which are excellent hostels, but they're not getting rated higher overall. – Mark Mayo Jul 13 '12 at 18:53

There may be for sure, but maybe in Portugal the value for money is the best in travelers' opinion. Probably it is really necessary to conduct a representative field study to find an objective answer for that. – RoflcoptrException Jul 13 '12 at 22:01
