While having a play with Sydney's public transport site as triggered by What is the cheapest metro system in world?, I found I could travel up to 522.32km one way Bathurst to Scone on a $8.20 fare (Source).

What is the furtherest point to point distance travelable on one ticket bought from a city's public transport system without changing modes of transport?

This is going to completely depend on your definition of “metro”. Bathurst isn't in the suburbs of Sydney by any reasonable definition (and the train to get there is run by the NSW government, not by the Syndey municipality — this also holds for many cities' inner-city metros). – Gilles Jul 9 '12 at 23:46
I'm asking about a city's public transport, I'm not talking about "metro" because I'm not sure what exactly that entails. As CityRail describes itself, "CityRail is the passenger rail service covering suburban Sydney and extending to the Hunter, Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands and South Coast regions". Who runs the public transport (local, state or federal governments) is irrelevant. – dlanod Jul 9 '12 at 23:57
Neither Bathurst or Scone are services by CityRail. They are both serviced by CountryLink, which is the regional/interstate fail service based in NSW. – Doc Jul 10 '12 at 0:11
Given the close votes, can anyone suggest a way that I can rephrase the question in such a way that doesn't seem to provide all these apparent ambiguities? To be honest I'm not seeing a fundamental difference between this and the question I linked to. – dlanod Jul 10 '12 at 0:15

You need to refine to get rid of ambiguities. Maybe "furtherest within a city's boundaries"? Otherwise - Some of Moscow's trains you can hop off within the city limits, so it's the transportation covering surburban Moscow, but can also continue all the way to the Pacific Ocean. – Mark Mayo Jul 10 '12 at 0:34
