My girlfriend and I are on vacation in San Fransisco the last week in July this summer and would like to hear where it makes most sense to stay in order to have good connections to move around with public transport or by foot.

We don't have an exact plan yet what all to do there, but would like to hear if there are things we should consider when deciding where to stay.

Please also mention if there are parts of the city we should avoid and why.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT

I'm not asking for specific accommodation recommendations, but rater some information whereabouts to look and which areas to maybe avoid.

Can you be more precise? As per the FAQ, travel.stackexchange.com/faq#dontask, the questions should be reasonably scoped. San Francisco is a big city and there are plenty of things to do and see over there. I think you should be more specific, if you want (useful) answers. – user766 Apr 9 '12 at 12:43
Where would you recommend/get accommodation for your best friend who comes for a visit (not considering he/she needs to be close to where you live)? I don't really ask for a specific hotel, more parts of the city that are OK and parts to avoid. – murrekatt Apr 9 '12 at 13:43

@murrekatt You have to be more precise about this. The community can only guess what your preferences are unless you describe what they are. – Karlson Apr 9 '12 at 14:04

@murrekatt: Wikitravel has a big page on San Francisco. Maybe you should start over there, and come back with more specific questions. wikitravel.org/en/San_Francisco – user766 Apr 9 '12 at 14:23
I'm not asking for my preferences, I'm asking for yours when you book for your friends. If someone asked my this question I could easily compare the different parts for a city I know well so the person who asks gets an idea what to expect from each part. I'm not asking you to solve something for me, rather asking for an overview and help from locals. – murrekatt Apr 9 '12 at 15:28
