Many Asian countries have towns or cities with an area we call the 'backpacker ghetto' which caters solely to the Western (and East Asian) traveler or tourist. You have guest houses, internet cafes, tour agencies, souvenir shops and restaurants with Western food.

In my three weeks in India so far I came across two such places; Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu and Varkala Beach in Kerala.

In the next months depending on my mood I may want to visit more backpacker ghettos or avoid them, so are there any more in India and if so, where are they?

List-style questions are usually not welcome on StackExchange sites. Can you limit your scope to cities / regions you will be visiting? Otherwise, India is a huge geographical region and I'll have to close this as - literally - overly broad. –  Ankur Banerjee Mar 19 '12 at 15:29
India has a bunch of these. The two that spring to mind are Goa and Hampi but as I only had a month. There was another in the north I can't remember the name of and a few others I hear people at the places in my list talk about in such a way that I knew that would also fall into this category... –  hippietrail Mar 19 '12 at 19:31
India is a large place - over a billion people means thousands of guest houses, many ghettos and a dime a dozen tour agencies, souvenir shops etc. Could you please re-edit your question to be more specific, avoiding the situation where answers would require lists (faq). Flag when you've done so and we'll reopen. –  Mark Mayo Mar 19 '12 at 21:49
Can this one be converted to a community wiki? –  John Doe Mar 20 '12 at 14:59
I am visiting all areas in India that potentially have these backpacker ghettos. And I know there is a limited number of them, maybe ten max. So it is not an open ended list. Someone who knows India well should be able to answer this in one answer. –  Peter Hahndorf Mar 22 '12 at 11:45
