I realize walking through northern Mexico has its issues and most of those issues can't be avoided. I am just looking for the "safest" route by foot in the southern gulf states. Now keep in mind the shorter the route the better.

Question too brief. Don't understand. You talk about Northern Mexico but then about the Southern states? Are you talking about the US/Mexico border region or the rest of North Mexico which is on the gulf and the Yucatan peninsula and has no US border? US border regions are much more dangerous than other parts of Northern Mexico, especially in the last few years. – hippietrail Mar 4 at 23:46
